About

Verbochromia is a type of synaesthesia, a condition in which the senses are all mixed up so that a person might hear a Beatles or Beethoven tune when they smell sausages, or something like that. I’m not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing.

Verbochromia specifically refers to associations between letters/words and colours. It is, of course, a well known fact that a is red, b is blue, c is yellow and d is black. Actually, no it isn’t. Verbochromia is a highly subjective phenomenon and members of the same family can argue for hours about the colour of different words and letters. I know this for a fact.

This site is about adding colour to words, whether that’s through reading, writing, translating, editing or proof-reading. If you are looking for help with any of these please contact me at helen.osullivan@verbochromia.com. Otherwise, I hope you will just enjoy browsing a little. As you read this page, there should be a variety of other word, language and culture-themed posts and links to peruse, and maybe even a picture or two.
